This position is a Textile Technologist in the Testing and Engineering Group of the Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility. The person selected for this position will work under close supervision until all facets of the position are learned. He/she will perform routine assignments, receive instructions on what to do, the methods to use, what to look for when conducting material evaluations.
You must be a US Citizen. Must be registered for Selective Service, see Legal & Regulatory Guidance. Suitable for Federal employment as determined by background investigation. Selectee may be required to successfully complete a probationary period. You must obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Plan and conduct routine and complex laboratory assessments for a wide range of textile materials
Determine suitable standard laboratory test methods to obtain information
Perform literature searches and compile data for ready reference
Operate textile and chemical testing equipment
Examine fabric swatches submitted by fabric suppliers for acceptability and approval of use in the construction of Navy dress/protective clothing
Provide recurring status reports to the Testing & Engineering Supervisor

BASIC REQUIREMENT - GS-05
Have a degree in Textile Technology
or
Have a combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in Textile Technology that included at least 20 semester hours in Textile Technology and closely related subjects, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GS-07

A. Have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level or pay band in the Federal Service or equivalent private or public sector. Creditable specialized experience includes the following: 1) assist in the planning and conducting routine laboratory testing/assessment for a wide range of textile materials and/or environmental protective clothing; 2) determine suitable standard laboratory test methods of textile materials to obtain information; 3) operate textile and chemical testing equipment; 4) record data using recognized laboratory practices and state-of-the-art data capturing/sharing techniques, data evaluation, and analysis.

B. Possess one year of graduate level education in courses equivalent to a major in textile technology and closely related subjects that are related to the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full time study. If that number cannot be obtained, 18 semester hours should be considered an academic year of graduate study.

C. Have successfully completed a 4 year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the Textile field or closely related field of study AND I meet one of the provisions of superior academic achievement. (NOTE: Superior Academic Achievement is achieved based on meeting one of the following: 1. A standing in the upper third of your college class or major subdivision (e.g., school of business) at the time you apply. 2. A grade point average of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent for all courses completed; (a) at the time of application; or (b) during the last two years of your undergraduate curriculum. 3. A B+ (3.5 on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent for all courses completed in a qualifying major field of study, either: (a) at the time of application; or (b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum. 4. Election to membership in one of the national honorary societies (other than freshman societies) that meets the requirements of the Association of College of Honor Societies. Grade point averages should be rounded to one decimal point. For example, 2.95 is rounded to 3.0, and 2.94 is rounded to 2.90. NOTE: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) was taken on a pass/fail or similar basis, your claim must be based on class standing or membership in an honor society).
